For many people, their first generalized anxiety disorder symptom appeared when
they were a child, while for others the first signs of difficulty emerged during
high school. Regardless of when the first sign of it appeared, this chronic condition
requires treatment and management in order to gain some relief from what can be
debilitating symptoms. While there is usually no one cause of anxiety disorders,
treating the condition usually involves some sort of medication and often talk therapy
as well. The medication helps alleviate chemical imbalances in the brain that contribute
to anxiety, while talk therapy deals with life issues and teaches techniques for
coping.
Most patients focus on managing their anxiety because a cure is not going to
just “happen”. The fact is that people who experience just one episode of anxiety
or depression are substantially more likely to experience one or more additional
episodes in the future; the severity of the episode is also a strong contributing
factor to future recurrences. Depending on the causes, it can be very common for
individuals to remain on a maintenance dosage of their anti depressant or anti anxiety
pill indefinitely.
Treatment for Depression and Anxiety
Alternatively, some practitioners and patients alike believe strongly that there
is a natural cure. Some look to fresh herbs or a mixed herbal remedy to relieve
symptoms, while others look to more behavioral and environmental solutions.
For example, some people like to write in a journal or exercise vigorously to
deal with their symptoms, while others find it soothing and helpful to adopt a pet
dog, cat, or other small animal. Some even become aquarium enthusiasts because they
find the sound of the water and the movement of the fish to be relaxing and helpful.
Another school thought derived from the “generative imprint” model, says that in fact,
it may be that the way you are running your entire neurology will make it either possible
or impossible for you to experience anxiety or depression at all. The practitioner would simply lead you
to where the anxiety isn't in the way they're "running" your somatic
experience(ie, body posture, breathing, muscle tension/relaxation, etc..) and as
long as your consciousness is there the experience would be impossible to access.
If you are dealing with anxiety or depression, it may be tempting to try to hide
it, ignore it, or otherwise avoid facing the issue. This may work in the short term,
but it is definitely not a long-term solution. Eventually it will become more and
more difficult to live with the imbalance and you will start to notice negative
impacts in your life. Do not wait until you feel as if your life is completely falling
apart to get some help. Talk to a doctor, talk to a trusted friend, or talk to a
counselor, therapist or other qualified professional. Help is available and just
waiting for you to ask for it.
There is no shame in having anxiety, and depression is not a sign of weakness.
No matter how hard it may seem to seek the help you know you need, in the end it
is much easier to get that help than it is to live without it.
