The Alexander Technique
A very popular tool used by the performance enhancement institutes is the Alexander
Technique which reduces stress while the client focuses on learning to accomplish
a better image of themselves in their life. The A.T. has been used for over fifty
years and has a very high success rate, to even be the precursor of the ideas now
applied and written about by Tony Robbins. One thing I've noticed is that their
vocabulary is very similar to that of those involved in life coaching.
Sports Enhancement
Turning to the world of sports, personal enhancement coaches are able to provide
a good definition of tangible results. You can measure their influence in increased
speed and strength, flexibility, balance, power and agility. The athletes appear
to be more "psyched up" and confident, and carry with them an image of winning,
which shows up my than challenging and oftentimes beating even their own personal
best. They use methods like physical training, muscle massage and strengthening
therapy as well as the mental preparation of goal setting and follow through visualization,
(basically where you "see" yourself winning.) This, in conjunction with good physical
training can be the companion to the physical strengthening with the emotional,
mental training necessary to be a true winner.
If you're enrolling in a course that requires physical exertion, the trainers
should be able to evaluate your physical as well as your mental ability. Most recommend
that you get a complete physical before coming to see them. Any reputable sports
enhancement coach will insist that you bring a chart of physical crediting from
your doctor on your first visit. This assures the trainer that you are physically
fit; it is also a good idea for you to make sure that you are physically able to
perform the training exercises.
Know What You Want
It is always a good idea that you know what to expect before you sign up for
a personal enhancement session. Know what you want before you walk in the
door. What I'm about to say here has been said countless times, but it is one of
the least listened to axioms: "You will get out of it what you put into it!" If
you come to an enhancement course with an unclear idea of what you want to be accomplishing
and where you want to be when you are finished you will have no way of knowing if
you've gotten there or not.
